US EPA GRANTS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS 
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will provide grantsunder its
new
Sustainable Development Challenge Grant Program, to
support partnering among community, business, and government entities 
to work cooperatively to develop flexible, locally-oriented approaches 
that link place-based environmental management, and quality of life
activities 
with sustainable development and revitalization. Deadline for application is
November 24, 1998. Funds are available to develop place-based approaches 
to problem solving related to current patterns of urban growth and public
investment/disinvestment, patterns that accelerate loss of open space and 
wetlands, and increase consumption of fossil fuels for energy and
transportation. 
While state agencies are eligible they are encouraged to work in partnership 
with community groups to strengthen their proposals.

Applicants may compete for funding in two ranges for FY 1998 
(1) US$50,000 or less; and (2) between $50,001 and $250,000.

INTERAMERICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK SEEKING
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTANTS

The Inter-American Development Bank's (IDB), Private Sector 
Department (PRI) is interested in hiring a consultant to assist in 
dealing with environmental and social aspects of IDB-funded 
private sector projects in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The position is for a junior to mid-level environmental/social 
consultant to be hired on a one-year, renewable, full-time consultant 
contract. The consultant will report to PRI's Senior Environmental 
Specialist. PRI desires to hire the consultant as soon as possible.

The consultants principal duty will consist of preparing the
Bank's project Environmental and Social Impact Briefs and
Environmental and Social Impact Reports based upon the available
existing information (e.g., environmental impacts assessments,
environmental due-diligence reports, etc.). The person must have a 
Bachelor's degree, as minimum, in an environmental related field, 
and preferably a Masters degree; have knowledge or experience related
to environmental impact assessments, preferably related to large
infrastructure projects in the areas of energy (power generation,
etc.), transportation (roads, etc.), and water and waste water; and
have extremely strong writing skills in English, and preferably

WORLD WILDLIFE FUND NEEDS ADVISOR FOR THE CONGO

The World Wildlife Fund based in Switzerland is seeking a 
Technical Advisor For The Democratic Republic of Congo. 
The position will be based within the Ministry of Environment,
Nature Conservation, and Tourism in Kinshasa, Democratic 
Republic of Congo (DRC). The major functions include providing 
scientific and technical advice/support to the Congolese Institute 
for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN) and the Ministry of Environment, 
Nature Conservation, and Tourism (MENCT). 

The person will provide a general review for MENCT of natural 
resource management in the DRC, including the status of protected 
areas, existing infra structures, and legislation and policies. The
successful candidate will have a Master's or Ph.D in biology, natural 
resource management, conservation or allied discipline. Will have at 
least five year's experience in conservation in Africa with preference 
in RDC, and a solid understanding of management of protected areas 
as well as experience in preparing project proposals involving community

IUCN WORLD CONSERVATION SEEKS AFRICA BIODIVERSITY
COORDINATOR

IUCN  The World Conservation Union is seeking to hire a Biodiversity
Coordinator, for its Eastern Africa Regional Office. Founded in 1948, 
IUCN  The World Conservation Union brings together States, government 
agencies and a diverse range of nongovernmental organisations in a unique 
environment and conservation partnership. Some 900 members in all, spread 
across 138 countries. The Eastern Africa Regional Office (EARO) implements

Dartmouth College is expanding its interdisciplinary environmental 
studies program through a tenure track appointment at the assistant 
professor level to begin fall 1999. Dartmouth seeks a natural or social 
scientist using mathematical and/or simulation modeling approaches 
to study environmental problems with an emphasis on large-scale systems.
It is especially interested in land/atmosphere interactions as they relate to

resource consumption modellers in Dennis and Donella Meadows

international resource economics starting September 1, 1999.

A postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the Coastal
Imaging Lab, College of Oceanic & Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State

to develop a statistical understanding of natural near shore variability and 
of the processes that drive it. Image data will be gathered utilizing the 
innovative research program ARGUS, which daily collects and returns 
image data via remote cameras located on beaches throughout the world.

U.K. UNIVERSITY WANTS TWO FISHERIES RESEARCHERS

The Centre for the Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources in
the Department of Economics, University of Portsmouth, U.K. is seeking
to appoint two researchers with backgrounds in econometrics, resource
economics or market research to provide academic and administrative
input to a European Union-funded research project. The first is a Research 
Associate/Research Fellow for two years (depending on qualification and 
experience). The second is a Research Assistant, initially for 6 months.

CANADIAN GRANTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

The International Council for Canadian Studies announced its
Foreign Government Awards for Canadians to study in Colombia, 
Finland, France and Mexico. The awards are intended to assist Canadian 
students to further their studies or conduct research abroad at the master’s, 
doctoral or postdoctoral level, and usually cover a period of at least six 
months. The deadlines for submitting an application for awards to be 
taken up during the 1999 2000 academic year, including awards for studies 
or research beginning in January 2000 are as follows, for Finland, France 
and Mexico submissions should be postmarked October 26, 1998 and 
delivered by hand or courier before 5 pm,  October 30, 1998. 
For Colombia submissions should be postmarked on or before  January 25, 
1999, and delivered by hand or courier before 5 pm January 29, 1999
