INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE RESEARCH AWARDS
IN URBAN AGRICULTURE
AGROPOLIS is a new Canadian awards program that supports innovative
master`s and doctoral level research related to urban and peri-urban
agriculture, designed to support interventions that address critical areas in
the agriculture industry in developing countries. The award will cover
justifiable field research expenses to a maximum of Cdn$20,000 per year.
Award tenure corresponds to the period of field research, normally no less
than 3 months and no more than 12 months. First-time successful applicants
may apply for renewal of funding for a second year of field research. Up to
14
awards will be granted annually, with at least 5 awards supporting field
research
at the master`s level. At least two-thirds of all awards will be granted to
applicants
who have citizenship or permanent resident status in a developing country. Up
to a
third of all award may be granted to citizens or permanent residents of a
developed

Wetlands International for the Africa, Europe, Middle East region

CSIRO's Centre for Arid Zone Research in Alice Springs, NT, Australia, is

U.S. EPA PROVIDES FELLOWSHIPS IN ENVIRONMENT
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) launched a
new grants program for fellowships in graduate environmental studies programs
in the U.S. Called, Science to Achieve Results, or the STAR Program, it
invites pre-applications for graduate fellowships in academic disciplines
relating
to environmental management including physical, biological, and social
sciences
and engineering. These Graduate Fellowships (offered by EPA) for masters and
doctoral level students in environmentally-related fields of study are
intended
to
help defray costs associated with advanced environmentally oriented study
leading
to the masters or doctoral degree. Subject to availability of funding, the
Agency
plans to award approximately 100 new fellowships. Masters level students may
receive support for up to two years. Doctoral students may be supported for a
maximum of three years. The fellowship program provides up to $34,000 per
year of support. This amount covers a $17,000 annual stipend, $5,000 for
authorized expenses, and up to $12,000 for tuition and fees. Actual annual

The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission in Oregon wishes
to hire a Biometrician (Fishery Scientist) to conduct population dynamics
and modeling. The person will serve on the Pacific Salmon Commission
Chinook Technical Committee, an inter-agency technical committee that
models chinook salmon stocks and fisheries along the Pacific coast.

chinook model used by the Pacific Salmon Commission to evaluate
alternative fishery management regimes. Qualifications includes
minimum requirement Bachelor's degree plus three years experience.
M.S., or Ph.D. in Fisheries or a related field with emphasis in population
dynamics, ecological modeling, conservation biology or applied statistics

mastery of computer skills, including statistical analysis and spreadsheet

CALIFORNIA WANTS THREE ASSISTANT ENVIRONMENTAL
SERVICES SPECIALIST
The City of San José, Environmental Services Department, is currently
accepting applications for Assistant Environmental Services Specialist
(AESS). The AESS performs professional level technical and analytical
work on the development, implementation and promotion of San Jose's
nationally renowned environmental programs. Qualified AESS candidates
may be asked to interview for positions in recycling and garbage, water
supply and conservation, sewage treatment, and environmental protection.
Currently, three positions are available. Two of these vacancies reside in
the
Integrated Waste Management (IWM) Division. IWM is responsible for
running one of the leading solid waste programs in the country, and boasts
a current diversion rate of 43% (55% for single family). Salary range is US

BAY OF BENGAL, INDIA, NEEDS REGIONAL COORDINATOR

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is
looking for a Regional Coordinator for the preparatory phase of the
"Sustainable Management of the Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem
(LME)" initiative. This is a regional activity supported by the Global
Environment Facility (GEF) through the World Bank as the GEF
Implementing Agency, the Swedish International Development Cooperation
Agency (Sida), FAO, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency
(NOAA). The participating countries are Bangladesh, India, Indonesia,
Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The successful
candidate will be stationed in Chennai (Madras), India. The candidate
should have an advanced university degree in one of the following fields
marine affairs, fisheries management/policy formulation, coastal area
management, environmental science, environmental/natural resources
economics, or related area. The person should have a minimum of 10 years
(for PhD) and 15 years (for Master's Degree) in working in the coastal
and marine environment, preferably in South and/or South East Asia;
and, demonstrate an ability to work in a multisectoral environment.
