AN UPDATE
The Future of Environmental Education in a
Postmodern World?
An On-Line Colloquium, October 19-30, 1998
At: http://www.ec.gc.ca/eco/education
The on-line colloquium and exchange of ideas concerning the future of environmental education requires the participation of concerned practitioners in Canada as well as abroad. We hope that you will want to take part.
Our website <http://www.ec.gc.ca/eco/education>, currently under construction is being prepared by
Environment Canada. At the site an introduction to the project can be found at
<http://www.ec.gc.ca/eco/education/index_e.htm> (English) or <http://www.ec.gc.ca/eco/education/index_f.htm> (French).
An advanced discussion by Lucie Sauvé of the Université du Québec à Montréal is now posted at
<http://www.ec.gc.ca/eco/education/colloquium_e.htm> (English) or <http://www.ec.gc.ca/eco/education/colloquium_f.htm> (French). We hope that this, and a couple of additional papers to be posted soon, will help to stimulate thought and discussion.
We would like to hear from you! If you wish to prepare a feature article for the colloquium, please submit a 200 word abstract within the next couple of weeks (by September 15. 1998). Please address abstracts to one of the following three areas for discussion:
1. Critiquing "education for sustainable development," "education for sustainability," & "education for a sustainable future."
* How can this critique help us to move forward?
* How do we reconcile the value laden nature of all education with rejection of "educationally" imposed ideologies?
2. Seeking a comprehensive framework for environmental education
* Can we agree on some national principles for environmental education?
* Can there be guidelines which allow for evolution and diversity of environmental thought?
* Can there be a global education framework appropriate to environmental education?
3. Visioning and future possibilities
* Are there essential elements for future visions of environmental education?
* Where does environmental education need to go-practically and theoretically?
We look forward to your participation in this important colloquium through the presentation of a feature article or by commenting on papers posted between October 19 and 30.
