I agree completely. An automatic reply to a publically asked
question is presumably of public interest and should go to the
public forum.
The special case should be response to the author only, or to
the author + list. The latter is really terrible, in general,
IMHO, because senders get two replies, and a response to
the wrong one doesn't make it to the list. This has happened
to me on numerous occasions. (Usually I'm careful, but it
would be better if the list were set up so that I don't have
to be. :-) )
