As promised in my earlier message, here is some information recently
obtained from the DfEE about the new hardship loans:
The DfEE are working on the new student loan regs which will also
cover the new hardship loans. On this latter point, Ministers
have now agreed:
one application will be allowed per student per year
minimum £100, maximum £250
payment will be by SLC who claim they should be able to do
it in a maximum of 5 days
allocation to institutions of available amount will
probably be done by number of eligible students with no
weighting
students will have to apply for Hardship Loan before Access
Funds although they might include the useful word
"normally" somewhere
There will be some guidance on criteria but it is unlikely
to be any more detailed than for Access Funds and we
probably won't get it until at least mid July because of
the protocol of not issuing guidance on regulations before
they are approved. The regs. will be laid down on the same
day as Royal Assent is given to the Bill (expecting that to
be 28 or 29 June) but then, of course, it depends how long
they take to be approved!
Hope that is helpful.
