Hi Rachael
As I recall from when I was at Aston sabbatical officers
who had graduated were still given Council Tax exemption
certificates on the grounds that they were registered as
full-time students. Indeed the University required sabbs to
be registered as full-time students, mainly so that it
retained some disciplinary powers over student officers.
It was certainly an important principle in the ruling by
the Visitor in the 80s over whether the University or the
Guild retained the right to say who could be a sabbatical
officer. In that case the Visitor upheld the right of the
University to determine who was a student and, therefore,
who was eligible to be a Guild Officer.
It seems rather inconsistent to demand that a student be
registered as full time but then not to count them as full
time for Council Tax purposes. Certainly, here at
Liverpool, we have two Guild Officers who have already
graduated and they are being treated as students by the
City Council.
Hope that helps rather than confuses the issue; I'm aware
that it is rather at variance from the other replies so far!
