SUMMER COURSES IN MEDIEVAL LATIN
In 1998 the Centre for Medieval Studies in Toronto will offer summer
courses at the MA and PhD levels. The courses will be concurrent and will
last seven weeks (22 June to 7 August). Prospective students must take
the Centre's MA Latin examination in April; admission and placement will
depend on performance in this exam. A pass on the MA exam is required for
admission to the PhD Latin course.
The fee for the courses is $600 (Cdn) for Canadians and $600 (US) for
non-Canadians. Some scholarship support may be available.
NATURE OF COURSES
Both MA and PhD courses will meet five days each week for an hour and
a half; the instructor will also be available half an hour each day
for consultation.
MA COURSE
This is intended for students who know the elements of Latin (basic
declensions and conjugations and some vocabulary). The aim is our MA
level pass, which indicates a thorough knowledge of the grammar and a
basic working vocabulary. There will be some grammar review and
regular reading practice in relatively easy Medieval Latin; there will
be frequent assignments, including Latin-English and English-Latin
translation, vocabulary exercises, and some sight passages.
PHD COURSE
This is intended for students who have passed the MA level (i.e.
already have a thorough knowledge of Latin grammar and a basic working
vocabulary). The aim is our PhD level, which indicates that a student
is fluent in Latin, is completely sound on grammar (accidence and
syntax), can handle complex sentences, has a wide vocabulary, and can
be trusted to use Latin for research purposes efficiently and without
error. Class work will include regular sight passages and reading in
difficult Medieval Latin of different periods and a wide range of
subject matter.
APPLICATIONS ARE DUE AT THE CENTRE FOR MEDIEVAL STUDIES BY 1 MARCH, 1998
