One think is sure, facing the lack of space( resulting from the increase in
population), and the absolutely fixed screens (the choir being an
untouchable space) in many parish churches (in France) from the 13th to the
15th c.,there was as many parishioners staying outside, in front of the
church, as inside the church, in the nave, to participate to the mass. Of
course, they had to keep the doors of the church opened, allowing a free
circulation in the nave.
