>Oh, bless you! If you could do some concerts and send contributions to the
Franciscans asking that they in turn use the contributions you have sent
them to help the poor, the elderly, those who have lost everything, who are
now living in tents in weather that has suddenly turned bitterly cold with
snow in the air, it would do much to redeem God and St Francis in the eyes
of the Umbrian earthquake victims. Earthquakes are continuing even today,
and have damaged structures in Umbria, the Marche and Sicily. Angela of
Foligno's medieval tower collapsed today. St Francis had sold a most
beautiful piece of cloth and a horse belonging to his father in front of it
in the Foligno market to repair St Damian, not realizing yet the vision was
that he should repair the whole Church. Money will come likely from the
government to repair the Assisi frescoes. But the people, whom Francis
loved, will, as usual, be neglected.
>Most of the frescoes can be saved, the two totally lost ones being the St
Matthew by Cimabue in the vault of the Four Evangelists and the St Jerome by
the young Giotto in the vault of the Four Doctors of the Church. But they
are still struggling to repair the whole edifice of the Basilica, having to
stop work last night with cranes because of lightning and the hazards to
workers and machinery.
>If you can, send money from the concerts to the Minister Generalis, Ordinis
Fratris Minorum Conventualium, Piazza SS. Apostoli, 51, 00187 ROMA, ITALY,
perhaps stating it is for the 'Terremotati', the people homeless from the
earthquakes.
>Our Italian Roman Breviary for St Francis' Day gives his Canticle of the
Sun in his actual medieval Italian, and it is so beautiful, and we sing it
in his medieval Italian still.
