Some of the most credulous
people are some of the most influential in our culture. The very fact
that most journalist equate "medieval" and "superstitious," the very fact
that people unthinkingly accept the assertion that so many claimed relics
of the True Cross exist as to amount to the mass of three or four real
crosses illustrates how credulous modern people are. For them to look
down their nose at medieval people as superstitious and credulous is a bit
much.
I found an example yesterday: if you look up `Ampleforth' on the
Net, you will get a lot of stuff about us (leave that alone, while we
are discussing crudulity..), but one little snippet referring to
`our' manuscript recording the Byland UFO of 1290.
We have no such MS: there never has been such a MS. The whole story
is a complete fabrication of two schoolboys here (I was another one
in the same form) who wrote a spoof letter to the Times in about
1952 or 53. From there it got into the books, and is now part of the
gospel. Since one of the inventors is a respectable philosophy don I
am reluctant to mention names, but I remember that the letter was
sigend AX Chumley (or maybe Cholemondely - it could be tricky to
check...)
Maybe I write to the professor and ask him if he has the reference.
We still correspond.
Remeber the Apostle Thomas. He did us good service by testing the
evidence...
