Dear Pat and others,
Well, I don't want to get embroiled in numerology here, but 12 has of
course an ancient authority as a counting base before it was superseded by
the decimal system, still perpetuated in the custom of putting certain
things into batches of a dozen (and 144 = a gross, i.e. a dozen dozen).
Perhaps these ancient associations still resonated in the Middle Ages. Pure
conjecture--please feel free to refute!
