This overlaps strongly with plans we have for accessing
digital datasets - where the datasets would normally
be archived in the file format from the application which
generated them, but might be used by other applications.
We have been writing a "data translator" for geospatial
entities to support this. Also some overlap with OGC type
activities. My plan had been to encode the type in the
resource description file (metadata) and then have the system
behave in the appropriate way for the type. Thus, the
type must definitely be extensible!
