As an addendum to the above, I'd like to take this opportunity to correct
something often repeated in scholorly sources that is a particular pet
peeve of mine and of general interest to the group-- i.e. the peace. The
Synod of Trosly (909) is generally recognized as important for the dev't
of the peace and it is often said that the main inspiration for it came
from the PsI Decretals-- not! Actually, it is clear that the main source
for the canons of Trosly was An/Benedict. On the synod, see Gehard
Schmitz, "Das Konzil von Trosly (909: Uberlieferung und Quellen," DA
XXXIII, 1977, pp. 341-434 and Isolde Schroder, Die westfrankischen Synoden
von 888 bis 987 und ihre Uberlieferung (MGH Hilfsmittel III; Munich, 1980;
s.v. 909 Juni 26 Trosly), pp. 189-97. NB the canons as printed in Mansi
XVIII.1.263-307 need to be used w/care.
