One of the best (totally irrelevant) but apparently true stories I
have ever heard, which puts the Renaissance nicely in its place, is
that of the visiting lecturer who after an hour's talk on the Middle
Ages was complimented afterwards by a student who, after some
hesitation, then asked: 'Just one question that is puzzling me: the
Middle Ages - did they come before or after the Renaissance?'
