Andrew is best known among the Orthodox as the author of The Great Canon
of Saint Andrew which is read in its entirety at the Morning Service of
THursday in the fifth week of Lent and sections of each ode are read in
the After-Supper Service of the Monday, Tuesday, wednesday and Thursday
of the first week. It's a splendid thing and now available from
Peregrina in a translation by Mother Thekla and Mother Katherine.
According to the Menaion for July 4, he was born in Damascus of
God-fearing parents and died in Eressos near Mytilene. It has been
suggested that "as a monk he was sent by the Patriarch Theodore of
Jeruslame to the Synod of Constantinople in 680 and was subsequently
ordained and later made Guardian of orphans; he was then appointed
Archbishop of Crete" (from Mother Thekla's introduction to the Great
Canon).
