ON this topic I suspect that the essential work to consult would be the
doctoral dissertation of Isabelle Cochelin, defended at the department of
history in the Universite de Montreal in the summer of 1996. Professor
Cochelin is now teaching (or will be come the fall) at the University of
TOronto, and might be able to inform you when the thesis, which is on how
Cluny dealt with various age groups (including both the old and the young)
in the period before (I think) 1120, will be published and in what format.
There seem to be some very interesting things she has deduced from the
wealth of material in the Cluny customaries and saints' lives.
HOpe this helps.
