Although such forms as Franciscan spirituality, creation spirituality,
Islamic spirituality, etc., are common.
Part of the ancestry of "spirituality" as a field of study or theological
specialisation is under the older headings "ascetical theology" or
"spiritual theology", and the even older "mystical theology" (first used
by Gerson?).
An interesting recent contribution to the subject is Kees Waaijman,
"Towards a phenomenological definition of spirituality", Studies in
Spirituality 3 (1993) 5-57, which lists many works and gives some
indication of evolving terminology.
