| As I recall, Guy Bougerol published an introduction to the study of St.
| Bonaventure. I believe it is still in print--I think I saw it out of the
| corner of my eye at Kalamazoo. But I don't have a precise title, nor do I
| recall exactly how comprehensive it is--I used it 20 years ago in graduate
| school. It think it is probably vol. 1 in the series of Bonaventure's
| works in translation published by St. Anthony's in New Jersey. It would
| now be about 30 years out-of-date, unless a revised edition was issued.
I snatched up the only copy this year. Five bucks US seemed a good deal for a
hardback. I think they plan to re-print. De Vinck is not the world's
best translator, and hence the French edition is much better. Still
it is a good intro text, but needs to be read with Distelbrink beside
you. I think Bougerol's exemplar was Chenu's Introduction to Thomas
(which I think is still very useful).
The full bibliog is:
J. Guy Bougerol, _Introduction to the Works of Bonaventure_, trans.
J. de Vinck (Paterson, NJ: St Anthony Guild Press, 1964).
Below the imprimatur mark is this short anecdote:
"On his way to Rome to receive the Red Had of a Cardinal,
[Bonaventure] stopped at a small Franciscan monastery. That is where
the papal delegation met him: he was busily washing the dishes.
With utter simplicity, he asked them to leave the hat on a bush
until he was through with his task."
One wonders if this should raise a new dictum: a cardinal['s hat] in
the bush is better than two in the hand...:-)
Sorry, but I am trying to avoid grading...

| Incidentally, my sense from reading reviews is that Weisheipl is
| effectively replaced by Stephen? Torrill's (spelling may not be quite
| right) mew book on Aquinas, one volume of which is now available in
| English from Catholic University of America Press and a second volume is
| on its way. The title is something like _Thomas Aquinas: Life and Work_.
Fr Jean-Pierre Torrell, that is. A very, very good biography.
Cheers
