Just to muddy the waters further, I ran across a brief but useful entry on
the _MVC_ in Peter and Linda Murray's _Oxford Companion to Christian Art
and Architecture_ yesterday, which reminded me that it has been suggested,
more recently than the authorities I cited, that the original version of
the _MVC_ actually dates from the first decades of the fourteenth century
and therefore is *not* the work of Giovanni de' Cauli (ob. c. 1270). The
Murrays don't give a source and I have conveniently repressed the memory of
it. Can anyone bring us up to date?
