The Mamotractus / Mamotrectus / Mammothreptus is an exegetical work,
written around 1300 by John of Reggio (Jean de la Marche, Johannes
Marchesinus) O.F.M., who in 1275 became lector in Imola, later Bologna It
is basically a Biblical handbook for etymology and
pronunciation. According to his own preface, John of Reggio was so fed up
with clerics who are promoted to the office of preacher without knowing
the proper pronunciation of Latin, that he decided to write a handbook
about it. Of most difficult words, he lists etymology, declenion,
pronunciation, accents, and meaning, from Genesis through Revelations. Not
all manuscripts contain the other parts of this work, difficult words from
the main church hymns, arranged by the order of the ecclesiastical year.
The title of the work is taken from St Augustine's sermons on Psalms, and
is a reference to the weaning of children.
It was printed in Mainz, 1470, and Metz, 1511.
