* Gregory VII, pope (1085) - although the Reform of the late eleventh and
early twelfth centuries takes its name from him, in the realm of canon law
it has been argued that he had almost no effect whatsoever (Do you
agree?)
HEJ Cowdret gave as many of you will know, a fine plenary address at
Kalamazoo on the subject of Gregory VII, a preview of a promised major
study of this pope by a scholar well positioned to give it. He argued as
well for the unimportance of Gregory in canon law. The reason, as I
recall, was that Gregory is rather more in an early medieval monastic
tradition of rhetoric and OT prophetic language, a much more spiritual
person that we are liable to think him to be, those of us raised in the
heritage of Ullmann.
