i'm not sure if this is on the right track, but in Suzanne Lewis' <Reading
Images> she discusses the way in which English Gothic Apocalypses structure
the reader's cognitive experience. It has to do with how the page is laid
out, and how the "vertically organized spatial hierarchy" of the text
provides a framework and a sort of model for the reader/viewer's
consciousness. Rather than likening the mind to a book, though, the
argument really describes how book shapes mind-process, and the
interactiveness of the 2.
I haven't introduced myself before but i've been enjoying all the info
while i prepare for my Oral Exam (end of the month). Student at NYU, Art
History -- and I'm starting to put together ideas for my dissertation --
i'm looking for images of rebels and transgressors (not necessarily
religious), and pimps and prostitutes -- especially from England, Ireland,
Scotland. I'm only just starting to track them down, so any suggestions
would be appreciated. Thanks!
