One prominent use was the genealogical roll, many of which survive
from the later Middle Ages for both royal and noble families. This
usage was also extrapolated back into a biblical context in, for
instance, Peter of Poitiers' late 12th-century Genealogy of Christ, of
which there survive quite a few later rotuli. In medieval art, the
rotulus continued to have associations with the pre-Christian era:
Prophets were commonly represented carrying rotuli, while Apostles
carried codices. Rotuli were also sometimes represented on the altar
of the Temple, often with a lamp above, presumably at least
approximating contemporary Jewish practice.
