Dear Dr Ginther
Thank you for your mail; I'm glad that my message was informative for
you, and I hope that I can also throw some light on your queries.
We are not currently planning to make changes to the search engine for
the CD-ROM edition of PLD. You can, in fact, limit a search to a
group of up to five authors and you can also effectively limit a
search to a single disc or part of a disc by limiting it to a range of
volumes. The new Web version does use a different search engine, but
the functionality is very similar to that of the CD-ROM.
The wild card search facility should generally make it possible to
find multiple case endings in PLD. For instance, a search on "bell*"
will find "bellum", "belli", "bello", and so on (of course, it will
also find "bellare", "belligerantium"...). Perhaps you would like to
clarify your difficulty here?
The keying of PLD did take place in the Philippines and we have never
made a secret of this. The keying company, Innodata, is an
excellent employer which provides its staff with good working
facilities, health care, and the like. It is one of the
world's leading data conversion companies, undertaking work for
many Western publishers, and is a well-regarded employer in the
Philippines.

Dear Caroline Howlett:
Your comments shed some light on the rather mysterious
world of providing the electronci PL. I must admit I still
find
the price borders on extortion, but then I continually complain
about the price of books. Please accept our rhetoric in the
light of the continual poverty most of us enjoy.
Is Chadwick-Healey considering re-writing the search engine? I
sometimes find the PL engine limiting (particularly when I
know I can do more with the engine attached to the CETEDOC
CD-ROM).. I would be nice have a better filtering mechanism
(such as
limiting searches to one disk or groups of authors, etc), and
allowing for *real* wild card searches (ie, multiple case
endings).
I have one further query. I have been always uncomfortable in using
the C-H PL because rumour has it that most of the data-entry took place
in the Philipines, where wage conditions are deplorable. I have
continued to use it, however, because I have been unable to confirm
whether this is the truth, or just another way to "diss"
Chadwick-Healey. I don't like to live my life based on rumour
(okay, not my *entire* life!). Perhaps you, Ms Howlett, could set
the record straight.
Cheers
Jim
