I know nothing about medieval alters, but I happen to have on my
bookshelf a book I have been meaning to read in order to learn about
them: Adolf Reinle, Die Ausstattung deutscher Kirchen im MIttelalter,
Darmstadt:Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, 1988. It seems to be mostly
concerned with material culture. The table of contents reads, in part:
Altaere; Taufbecken und Brunnen; Sitze und Gestuehle; Kultgefaesse;
Buecher; Gewaende und Tuecher, and so on. Whether it would answer your
specific question, I don't know. There is only a short bibliography
"Ausgewaehlte Literatur", more like further reading.
