Not being a liturgiologist (I believe that's the correct expression), I
was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction in
exploring the phenomenon of altars located against walls in
medieval European churches. I am assuming this had something to
do with liturgical changes that moved the celebrant of the Mass from
the east side of the altar to the west side, a change which I believe
was generally effected in the 11th and/or 12th centuries, thus allowing
altars to be placed against the east walls of chapels and also
allowing the appearance of altarpieces. Any bibliographic
suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in advance.
