JEROME ROTHENBERG / PIERRE JORIS AT WF WORKSHOP LONDON 20 9 97
JR and PJ joined the Writers Forum workshop – entering its 45th year - this
Saturday. No time to give a full account but I would like to record however
inadequately a remarkable event.
JR opened by reading _Night Poem #1 for Jackson Mac Low_ - a three parter
wide ranging in terms of content making exciting use of not just rhyme but
the idea of rhyme in a multilingual compositional field - i.e. what rhymes
and how in one language doesn't in another
Later he read from his translations of Picasso from his new project with
Pierre to translate the complete poems and plays of Picasso
Pierre read from his translations of pre Islamic Arabic poetry
Other performance contributors included Johan de Wit, Adrian Clarke,
Lawrence Upton, Jennifer Pike and Bob Cobbing.
Discussion of the issues raised by the performances continued between and
after the performances; and for a while in the bar below after the workshop
It is a pity that relatively few people turned out to share the workshop
with Jerry and Pierre. It is hardly an every day opportunity.
Never mind.
Jerome Rothenberg and Pierre Joris performe at SVP – upstairs, 3 cups,
sandland street, london wc1 8pm Tuesday 23rd sep 97 admission £5 / £2.50
The next WF workshop will be 27th Sep 97 at 3.30 pm Upstairs, Victoria,
Mornington Place, off Mornington Crescent 50p admission
As well as offering an opportunity to anyone interested in experimentation
in poetry performance, Johan de Wit will be launching titles from WF, RWC,
Mainstream and Hill Books
