There is type of firework known as a Catherine Wheel. It consists of a
set of small rockets mounted on the circumference of a circle. You nail
it to a fence with a single nail through the centre, and then light the
rockets.
It goes round and round very quickly, letting out a lot of noise and
sparks, but never actually moves fromn the fence you nailed it to.
I suggest that we all meditate upon the meaning of the Catherine Wheel.
It is both an excellent (if post-medieval) example of the type of devout
frivolity that I was referring to, and an excellent metaphor for some of
the arguments that we have been having of late.
