I deleted the message, so I don't remember who asked about whether medieval
mystics thought of themselves as mystics.
According to Jeffrey B. Russell in _Dissent and Order in the Middle Ages_:
"A religious attitude emerging in the twelfth century and symbolized by the
work of Joachim and Amalric can, with caution, be called mysticism...
The term 'mysticism' was not invented until the eighteenth century, so no
medieval persons thought of themselves as mystics, and the term is bets
avoided."
Hope that is of some small help.
