short intro (alas w/o orig. sources) to the investiture controversy is
Uta-Renata Blumenthal (auth. and trans. from the German orig.), The
Investiture Controversy: Church and Monarchy from the Ninth to the Twelfth
Century (U. of Pennsylvania Press, 1988).
