I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following:
Most of us are familiar with the idea of the "translatio imperii", or
"cessatio imperii", medieval historico-political ideas that deal with the
idea that there is only ONE "empire" at the time in the world (drawing on
the biblical book of Daniel). After the
Babylonians lost it to the Persians, they in turn lost it to the Greeks
(Alexander the Great), who lost it to the Romans.
After the Romans, it was transferred to the Franks, I believe. But what
about the collapse of Charlemagne's empire. Was the empire still thought
to be in the hands of the Franks? Who would a 14th-century author say was
in the possession of the "empire" in his own time? And of course after
the "cessatio imperii", the Antichrist will come ... !
Is there any good literature about this? Thanks in advance!
