I certainly agree with George Ferzoco. Duby's contribution to medieval
studies was highly significant. He was a credit to the Annales School.
Aside from his economic history/agrarian history, there is his early work
on the Maconnais, and his collected essays on chivalric society, not to
mention his general/art historical/popularizing books. When he came to
speak at Edinburgh, he was very courteous, dignified without being pompous,
and never a prima donna. Those, like him, at the very top seemingly have
left all pettiness behind.
