Dear Gary,
just a quick and hurried remark: "Gaz(z)ari" was one of the names which were
used for the apostolic sect of Fra Dolcino, and I recall to have seen
differing explanations deriving the word from 'Catari' or from 'Ketzer'. The
mountain in the district of Biella on which Dolcino and his followers were
besieged during the crusade of 1306/7, today San Bernardino, is described in
the anonymous _Historia fratris Dulcini heresiarche' (written not later than
1310) as follows: "qui (sc. mons) tunc appellabatur mons Rebellus, qui est
super locum Triverii dicte diocesis Vercellarum, nunc vero propter incolatum
dictorum hereitcorum Gazzarorum appellatur mons Gazzarorum sive fratris
Dulcini" (RIS t.IX.3, nuova ed., p.5 l.24ss., see also ibd. l.29 "ipsi
Gazzari"). I don't remember whether the term is already attested in earlier
sources, and whether it was used also (as I believe) for other sects, but if
you want me to, I can try to look it up tomorrow.
Yours,
Otfried
