About the quantity of wine consumed by the monks, I think that the great
quantity is due to their the poor alimentary diet , the bases of their
diet was bread , meat and wine . I believe that the wine was important
necessary as a caloric complemetation. An other answer for this quetion
is the afirmation by Antonio H. de oliveira Marques (A Sociedade
Medieval Portuguesa): they drank the wine mixed with water , that mixture
was used to kill the thirst . He says that one part of wine and two parts
of water , was the ideal drink for them .
