Congratulations to Otfried, whose translation seems to be as pretty
as a french medievist could do !
Some suggestions anyhow
> sur la montaigne *doluiet* ie **luay** xxx. goutes
>de ***ave*** ****sanguines****.
>"On the Mount of Olives I sweated out 30 beads of water mixed with blood"
>***ave***: should be "eve" or "eave" or even "iave", but there are so many
>variant spellings for this word that it might even have been spelled
>occasionally "ave"
---I think we have to read EAUE, but it would be necessary
to look at the ms : eaue sanguine, or eaues sanguines ? I think we have
perhaps simply drops of blood
> Et a ma face ie eulx *(culx?)*
>cent et deux cops. et siept fois *iectes* a terre dessoubs les pies des
>iuipz. quant il me **evirent** pris au iardin.
>"And in(to) my face I received 102 blows. And seven times [I suffered]
>throwings to the ground under the feet of the Jews when they took me as a
>prisoner (literally: captured) out of the garden."
>**evirent**: I am only guessing the sense, but I would have to look up the
>word or its form ("e(s)vi(e)r"?)
----Can we read "eurent" the sense would be then when they
had taken me...
> il vous en *souivegne*. Et voilles me diter **sur** ceste
>petitte passion **piur** acquerir salvation.
>May you remember it. And may you write down this little Passion in order to
>gain salvation.
>*souivegne*: should be "souviegne"
>**sur**: entirely obscure to me. I considered for a moment but then rather
rejected the possibility that it might be "seur", "sister!", i.e. an
apostrophe to Bridget.
>***piur***: should be "po(u)r"
I think we have to read "et voilles MEDITER SUR ceste petitte
passion ...", i.e. "an may you MEDITATE ON this little Passion...." The
"sur" is clear then.
I read a text like this on pious pictures of the beginning of the
century, around the first World War, recommended by the Pope. It was the
sort of prayer which could let the person (of the one for who he/she prayed)
know the coming of death, and so prepare to it : I'm afraid everybody knows
this in this list.
