At some risk of adding to the noise level on meta2, I am forwarding this
message I got about the use of Publisher Item Identifiers. It shows some
modes of thought thyat we may (or may not) want to take into account. --pg

Math. Reviews will soon begin capturing and storing Publisher Item
Identifiers (PII) attached to papers we index (more information about PII's
can be found at http://pubs.acs.org/journals/pubiden.html). To be brief,
PII's are unique, format-independent document identifiers that MR expects
will be crucial in providing links to documents via MathSciNet. Publishers
that will be using PII's in their journals include: AMS, SIAM, APS, AIP,
IOP, IEEE, Elsevier/North-Holland. The PII's in AMS journals may be used to
make direct links to the original article from the review in MR.
We are assuming that we will see PII's initially on articles in traditional
paper journals, but that they will also soon appear on books, articles in
monographic collections, and, of course, in the files of electronic
journals.
Some questions for the PAMnet community (including any publishers who may
choose to respond):
1. What are your thoughts on the use of document identifiers? Are they of
any particular interest to librarians? Or only obliquely so? (They are,
after all, "publisher" identifiers).
2. Are any of you planning on including such identifiers in your cataloging?
3. Should MR display PII's, along with the standard bibliographic information?
4. What about other document identifiers---specifically CCC (Copyright
Clearance Center) identifiers? Do you think they are as important to store
as PII's (some publishers provide both identifiers on papers)?
5. For publishers: What methods do you plan to use to specify links to
individual journal articles? In particular, will these involve knowing
some identifying number printed on the journal article itself? Does anyone
know if the article numbers printed in Academic Press journals will be used
for such links?
Answers to any of these questions, any additional questions you want to
raise, or general comments are most welcome. I'll summarize the responses
in a future posting.
Thanks,
Bert
