i was wondering if anyone knows of any critical discussions of
Huizinga's
'Waning of the Middle Ages'. I want to set this text in a course on
Northern Art and its historiography - You can email privately at

There is a marvellous, recent source which is ideal for your very
purpose (I've used it myself), a whole chapter on Huizinga in Francis
Haskell, History and its Images: Art and the Interpretation of the Past
(New Haven, Yale U.P., 1993). There is also a new translation
of Huizinga's work which is not edited and which includes the
author's original notes, by Rodney J. Payton and Ulrich Mammitzsch,
entitled The Autumn of the Middle Ages (U.Chicago Press, 1996).
