I don't know if this pertains towhat you're searching for, but the Order of
St. James (aka Orden de Santiago) which had members in Spain, France and Italy
(and probably elsewhere, but in those countries I am sure) included both
religious and secular members. The secular members were allowed to be married
and to have children; the spouses and children were automatically included in
the membership.
