One book you might try is Mary Flowers Braswell, _The Medieval Sinner:
Characterization and Confession in the Literature of the English Middle
Ages_ (Rutherford, NJ: Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 1983).
Unfortunately, Notre Dame's copy is out at the moment, so I can't give you
any more specific information about what it covers. Perhaps someone else on
the list has worked with this book . . . ?
