I am writing this query mainly on behalf of my colleague (the presently
e-mail-less) Stephen Bemrose (and partly out of my interest in the query,
given that I've got to prepare a lecture on *Inferno*, canto 3)...
Both of us would be grateful to receive any references you may have
encountered in texts from any period up to the time of Dante, dealing with
neutral angels, that is, angels who neither remained with God nor were
cast down for (or by) following Lucifer. Stephen knows of an early article
discussing the concept in the *Inferno* and the *Parzifal*, and also that
a *vita* of St Brendan is relevant; still, any references to primary or
secondary sources would be gratefully received. (Surely, *some* medieval
theologian had to deal with this, no?)
Mille grazie, George
