I would like to introduce myself, a little belatedly, to the group.
I am interested in the collections of saints' relics held by medieval
religious houses in the British Isles and the identities of the
saints concerned. My current focus is on the Glastonbury relic collection
and I am co-editing the relic list contained in Cottonian MS Titus. D.7.
I am particularly interested in the Celtic saints of Britain.I have found the
comments of other list-members on the different saints very helpful and
informative. This a wonderful list!
By way of apology for my late introduction I should like to offer a
partial answer to the question raised by other members regarding sources
of the story that Molua was mourned by the birds when he died. There is an
allusion to this in the Martyrology of Oengus the Culdee, edited by
Whitley Stokes for the Henry Bradshaw Society in 1905. I quote from the
translation on p.183 of this edition: "Now this is that Molua who never
killed a bird or any other living thing, and Mael-anfaid saw the bird
bewailing him." It is "bird", singular rather than plural. As I say, a
partial answer.(:>)
