The Social Context of Death, Dying and Disposal
3rd International Biennial Conference
4-6 April 1997
Notice of Conference and Call for Papers
This third international conference will explore cultural responses
to death, dying and disposal. It will be of interest to scholars in
the fields of anthropology, archeology, law, medicine, palliative
care, philosophy, social history, social policy, social psychology,
sociology and theology, and to anyone who deals with death on a
professional basis. Two books of papers from the first Conference
have been produced. "Contemporary Issues in the Sociology of Death,
Dying and Disposal" (Macmillans) was published earlier this year.
"The Changing Face of Death: Historical Accounts of Death and
Disposal", also to be published by Macmillans, will appear shortly.
The Journal, Mortality (first issue March 1996), has been born out of
the Conference.
The residential conference, organised by Julie Dunk, Glennys Howarth,
Peter Jupp, Lyndsay Prior, and Stephen White, will be held at the
University of Wales Cardiff. The plenary speakers will be:
Dr Halla Beloff, International Social Sciences Institute, Edinburgh
University - The Face of Death and the power of photography
Professor Bernard Knight, University of Wales College of Medicine -
Death, Autopsies and the Community - Public Interest and Private Wants
Dr Jay Winter, Cambridge University - Remembering Total War
Abstracts (maximum 250 words) of papers are invited which address
issues of social and cultural importance connected with death, dying
and disposal.
Dr Winter is the author of seven programmes, made jointly by the BBC
and KCET Los Angeles, on "The Great War and the Shaping of the
Twentieth Century", which are scheduled to be shown weekly on BBC2
from 11 November. The last programme deals with mourning and
remembrance. His presentation will deal particularly with issues
raised in, and by the making of, this programme. A facility will be
provided for those who wish to view the programme beforehand.

Booklets of abstracts of the papers at the Conference will be given
to those attending. Others may order them at stlg5.00 a copy with a
cheque made payable to "UWC".
Offers are invited to host the 1999 Conference.
