Sorry to shatter your illusions about St Maura, David and Carolyn,
but a league is generally reckoned to be three miles (according to
the Oxford English Dictionary), although it was apparently never in
general use as a unit of distance in England. According to Random
House and Webster's dictionaries, a league varied between 2.4 and
4.6 miles and in Gaul may have been 1.5 *Roman* miles. Someone more
knowledgeable than I can no doubt state how the Roman mile relates to
the good old 1760-yard mile.
Regards.

*A practical hint for the home*
To extricate a rasher of bacon stuck in the slot of a child's money-
box, use a small shoehorn or glove-stretcher as a lever, holding the
box firmly in the left hand and levering gently with the right hand.
