Hi,
I am new to your list and responded to the message on the Chaucer list, delighted to find you existed because of the relevance of your period both to Chaucer
and to part of my Ph.D. thesis, which is in the throes of completion. My
thesis is dealing with covert astronomical/astrological codes in the works
of Chaucer and Shakespeare. Conditions for the completion of a Ph.D. in
New Zealand are somewhat different from those overseas, I believe. We do
not have taught classes and follow the Oxford tradition. The Master's degree
is regarded as preparation in methodology for Ph.D. research. Some of you
might appreciate that working alone on a medieval period subject in a
country so far removed from the primary source materials makes the internet
a really invaluable resource and it frequently ignites a new train of thought
proving quite fruitful. I have been fortunate in having my university
subsidise research at the Bodleian and residence at Pembroke College in
Oxford, and also at the Warburg Institute in London, where I would cheerfully
have spent the rest of my life. I look forward to learning from contributions
on this board and maybe to contributing something of value to it myself from
time to time. Garth.
