Today, 18 September, is the feast of...
Ferreolus, martyr (third century?): Tribune living in Vienne (Gaul),
miraculously escaped imprisonment only to be recaptured and beheaded.
Methodius of Olympus, bishop and martyr (311): - No details of life or
martyrdom, but best known for his
*Symposium* (dealing with virginity).
Richardis, widow (c. 895): Married to Charles the Fat, who accused her of
unfaithfulness; she then survived an ordeal by fire, and left Charles for
a nunnery
Joseph of Cupertino, tertiary Franciscan (1663): Before his saintly ways
shone through, Joseph had a very unhappy childhood. His widowed mother
looked on him as a nuisance and a burden and treated him with great
severity. Joseph developed an extreme absentmindedness and inertia. He
would forget his meals, and when reminded of them he would simply say, "I
forgot." He wandered open-mouthed in an aimless way about the village so
that he earned the name "Boccaperta", the gaper. However, in later life
Joseph is most remembered for his ability to fly.
