I don't think the two are mutually contradictory. N.B. I'm not saying that
Urban tried to repress the cult-- he (I think) tried to harness and tame
it and offer alternatives to blunt it. The indirect, carrot and stick
approach strikes me as typical of Urban. I haven't started to write about
this yet (it may not even fit the diss. & wind up as an article later).
Right now I'm in the midst of obsessing on Gregory and the peace. When I
return to Urban, I'll get back to you.
