Just as an aside the image of arrows as divine punishment also has precident
in the Illiad, no? As I recall Apollo strides the shore where the Athenians
are docked and shoots arrows of disease upon them.
As another aside, it fascinates me that the statues of St. Roch available in
the local - sanctioned - "Catholic Goods" store seems much more cleaned-up
(less blood, fewer bubos) than the ones available elsewhere in the Bronx
(where you can also find anti-demon sprays and other ecclesiastically
frowned upon items). The moral I draw is that the poor and suffering want a
saint whose extremes of suffering can surpass and, so, edify their own.
