I certainly accept Tom Izbicki's comments (and would welcome his reference
to a late painting which shows Peter of Verona as an Inquisitor); perhaps I
was too rhetorical; nevertheless, it is interesting that Peter Martyr, the
Dominican Inquisitor, got canonized and neither Peter of Castelnau (a
Cistercian legate) nor the similarly assassinated layman Peter of Parenzo
[cf. S. Pietro: la leggenda scritta dal Giovanni Canonico / a cura del V.
Natalini (Romae, 1936)], Innocent III's anti-heretical appointee in
Cathar-ridden Orvieto, was so elevated.
