dear otfried
the Vision is translated in Wakefield and Evans *Heresies of the High
Middle Ages* (NY: Columbia University Press, 1992 reprint) pp.449-456,
followed by a "re-telling" from inquisitorial records of the early
fourteenth century. W&E say that a Latin version of the text (and Greek
and Ethiopic!) are found in R.H.Charles *The Ascension of Isaiah,
Translated from the Ethiopic Version, WHich Together with the New Greek
Fragment, the Latin versions and the Latin translation of the Slavonic,
is Here Published in Full* (London, 1900) [catchy title, huh?] A french
translation is also found in Rene Nelli's article in Cahiers d'Etudes
Cathares v.33 (1958) pp.23-38; and, i think, in his book *Ecritures
Cathares*.
Rene Nelli, in fact, leads one to a few other comments on the Cathars
"afterlife" in modern France. He set up the Centre d'etudes cathares,
now run by Ann Brenon, which has provided a scholarly, but also
enthusiastic, platform for Cathar studies. Nelli's writings are a bit
nuts, but he provides useful detail ... Brenon [*Le Vrai Visage du
Catharism*, *Les Femmes Cathares*] is also an academic writer
*extremely* emotionally connected to her subject ... Basically, for most
of the people at the centre of Cathar studies in southern France, it is
very difficult to draw a line between what is "academic" and what is
"popular" [and france, btw, has a much better habit of making
accessible acacdemic texts to its public than england - for example, i
bought Delumeau's *L'aveu et le Pardon* from a small wooden shack outside
a chateau in the Midi last year]
There is in fact an article published on the popular recuperation of the
Cathars, C.O.Carbonell "Vulgarisation et recuperation: le catharisme a
travers les mass-media" in Cahiers de Fanjeaux v.14 (Fanjeaux: Privat,
1991) pp.361-380. ANd a [pretty gross] new book on cathars and the
crusade, Michael Baldwin *The Rape of Oc*. And i think my friend
Felicity Jones has done some more work on all of this [and she may be on
the list, i'm not sure at the moment ...]
