The following is a very ignorant question, asked without any preceeding
attempt of mine to find out myself, but I am so desperately short of time
these days that I thought I might give it a try: Does anyone of you happen
to know anything about Donatus of Fiesole, bishop of Fiesole ca. 829-876,
mentioned in "an ancient collection of the _Vitae Patrum_, of which an
eleventh-century copy exists in the Laurentian library of Florence",
described in this Vita as having come from Ireland and, among other things,
as dedicated to composing poetry and teaching "the art of metrical
composition", even cited in the same Vita with several of his verses among
which an epitaph and a twelve line poem about Fiesole?
I was not aware of this person, but just came across an article in the
Catholic Encyclopedia (on-line) where I gathered the data given above.
Unfortunately, the article does not tell where the text of this Vita can be
found published. My DBF contains a lot of items for the _Vitae Patrum_,
their textual tradition and vernacular translations, but I have never done
any work in this area and don't know where to start. All I want at present
is to have a look at the Vita, because I might have to cite it in an
eventual, though not really indispensable, footnote of my diss. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.
